Fly away to college: a note on transitions

spreadyourwings

going to college is scary

This time of year thousands of kids are spreading their wings and flying away from their nest and to their respective universities and colleges of choice. Some people will have no problem with the transition (or at least say that they have no problem)- but the reality is that almost everyone is freaking out too. And with a good reason, going off to college is scary at first. Your parent(s) leave you in a tiny dorm room with a tiny bed and another kid your age that you don’t really know (in most cases). It’s crazy stuff right there. Totally cool to be nervous about a new beginning, new friends, harder classes and unprecedented freedom. (Okay maybe you probably shouldn’t be nervous about the freedom part).

People are often very stressed, so first impressions of people might not be the best. So give people second chances, stress does crazy things to the best of us. Lots of people are off on their own for the first time ever, be kind. The people you meet first don’t have to be your best friends, sometimes you just need people to help you get started. Don’t be afraid to keep meeting new people, I met some of my best friends in college my junior and senior years.

createyourself

everyone has second thoughts

Did I pick the right school? Will I find friends? Will school be impossible? Will this school be the best place for me to grow and figure out what I want to do with my life?

Remember, this doesn’t have to be where you stay at school. Lots of people transfer, there is nothing wrong with that. Remember that you can always go back home and that there are plenty of people who are nervous about the same things you are. Also keep in mind that there are tons of people at your school that will help you through this transition, you probably have an adviser and that is a great place to start if you have any concerns or questions.

Moving away is stressful, you leave everything in your comfort zone, but I’ve found the only way to grow is by leaving that beloved comfort zone and following your dreams.

dreams

set goals, go to class, define yourself

College is a great time to have a great time, but don’t let your social life rule your first year of school. Yes, go out and have fun, be smart and safe – or don’t, but find something to get involved in. Something where you meet new people with similar interests and goals that will help you evolve into someone who is ready to enter the real world in four years. Go greek if you’d like, join a club or two, play sports (competitively or just for fun), join student government, something…anything! Trust me, getting involved helps the school year go quickly and if your busy you probably won’t be homesick- but once you start figuring out how awesome college can be, you’ll dread coming home for breaks.

Set goals for yourself, whether it be grades or benchmarks to help you achieve your dreams, never stop having a plan. Set up a four year plan for what classes you want to take- this helps you ensure that you will be graduating on time and not incurring any unnecessary student loans. Know that your plans can change and the classes can be changed, this is not permanent, just something to use as a starting guide.

Go to class. End of story, you pay hundreds and in most cases thousands of dollars for each class- so make sure you go. Lots of professors have attendance policies now, but even if they don’t be responsible and make yourself go, it will help you in the long run, even if they are just re-discussing the book you’ve already read, you paid for it so you might as well be there. It’s like buying a fridge full of groceries that you throw away without eating any of it if you just don’t go to class. Food for thought.

Learn about yourself. This is the time to discover who you are, you are finally away from your parents (ideally) and able to make decisions for yourself. You pick what you eat, when you eat, where you go, when you sleep and study, and who you are with at almost all times. Take a step back and think about where you want to be in let’s say 10 years. Figure out what’s important to you and what interests you. Then feed those interests and stay true to what is important.

College is the best four years of your life. Savor each moment and enjoy the ride. It’s okay to be unsure about everything, it’s completely normal. You don’t have to declare a major freshman year, you don’t have to be president of your organization, you just have to spread your wings and fly out of your comfort zone. You will never reach your dreams if you don’t try.

Tour of Epot: Featuring World Showcase

Until recently EPCOT had not been on my list of favorite places to visit. After this last visit when I had tons of free time to do research about what all to do in EPCOT I have decided this is one of the coolest places, like anywhere. Basically if you can’t decide what kind of food you want to eat, go to EPCOT. You can sample everything and anything.

EPCOT: future world
Start the journey around EPCOT by trying soda from around the world.

In future world, right behind Spaceship Earth, Coca-Cola has a storefront that not only sells coca-cola products but has a soda station that lets you sample crazy concoctions from around the world. Some taste awesome, others not so much! It’s a great place to get a free drink too.

My favorite ride in EPCOT? Hands down Test Track!

My favorite ride in EPCOT? Hands down Test Track!

What about the rides? My favorite in EPCOT has to be Test Track. We hadn’t been able to ride this attraction in almost four years so it was really fun to be able to see what they changed. I think this is one of the most well done rides in all the parks.

Sponsored by Chevy!

Sponsored by Chevy!

I’ll probably do an in depth post about this ride at some point, but I’ll do just a quick overview of the ride right now. There are three lines: standby, single rider and fastpass. Single rider is always a great way to get on this ride with a little less wait time (but you may be split up from your group). You get to design your own car and then compare how your car did against the other riders in the car. Then after the ride you can do all sorts of activities with your car that is saved onto your magic band or park pass. Things like making a commercial and taking your photo with your car, really fun and you can spend lots of time designing more cars and looking around in the showroom- even checking out the latest line-up of Chevrolet cars!

Character Spot in Epcot

The character spot in EPCOT is a great place to see three main characters- usually Mickey, Minnie and Goofy! Wait in line once and see all three instead of hunting each one down! There is also a fastpass available for the Character Spot.

There is also a large gift shop in future world that has lots of both EPCOT themed and WDW themed gifts and keepsakes. I found a few cool things in here and left with a great long sleeved EPCOT shirt!

Other spots to visit would be Soarin’, Captain EO (featuring Michael Jackson), and the Refreshment Port to grab a cronut!

EPCOT: world showcase

Now onto my favorite part: world showcase! If you’ve never been it is a must see! Imagine the giant tourist draws from each country shoved around one little lagoon, one after another. Featuring food and entertainment from each country that is represented it really is a great place to try new food and drink as well as be entertained. There is at least one major restaurant in each country and plenty of table service as well as quick service and cart options. Be sure to make reservations in advance at the table service options though! I’ll take you through a quick “tour” via some of my photos I took while I was recently there! Let’s start with Canada, ‘eh!

I ran out of willpower by the time we got to Mexico, so this isn’t a complete tour- but I hope you got the taste for what is available at EPCOT! I can’t wait to come back soon and try more food and drinks and take more photos, Epcot truly is different from all of the other park experiences and if you choose to go to one other park other than Magic Kingdom I would pick EPCOT- especially if you have older kids or mostly adults!

Also- in the gift shop they have passports you can buy and you can have proof that you visited every country in World Showcase!

The Pearl, a lovely tropical drink with a cinnamon flavor that comes with a souvenir pearl all your own. My favorite drink of choice!

The Pearl, a lovely tropical drink with a cinnamon flavor that comes with a souvenir pearl all your own. My favorite drink of choice!

Trader Sam’s is my new favorite place on Disney property. From the hours of 4pm-8pm it is family friendly and all ages are allowed in, so if you aren’t an adult only party you can still visit!

Never been to Trader Sam’s before? I hadn’t either until we visited the original in California earlier this year after reading about it on the internet as a “must see” at Disneyland. When we arranged to stay at the Polynesian through DVC we were thrilled that a second Trader Sam’s had opened just recently at our hotel!

IMG_7440

What is Trader Sam’s exactly you might ask, I’ll give you a run down here and share some of my favorite parts about it! Trader Sam is the head hunter you meet at the end of the Jungle Cruise, so the bar is themed off of the Jungle Cruise. I also think they were inspired by the Tiki Room as well with similar decor. This is a specialty themed bar that puts on a show every time one of the specialty drinks are ordered. The servers double as comedians, you will come out of that bar grinning from ear to ear and with a great attitude. Great cool place to cool down after a long day at the park.

IMG_7441

protip: come at 3:30 to be sure you get a seat at 4

There is room for about 50 people in the bar, so you may end up having to wait when you come. The bar opens at 4, but if you go around 3:30 you can get a buzzer to guarantee your spot when the doors open!

If you end up not getting a seat in the bar you can wait for a seat to open or just go sit on the patio and you can get the same drinks and food, you just don’t get the atmosphere of being inside- so if you’ve never been before I would highly recommend waiting to be seated inside!

There are tons of choices when it comes to drinks and there is something for everyone, even a grown up version of a dole whip drink! About half of the drinks come with the option to get a collectible Tiki mug and we have made it our “Disney hobby” to collect some each time we go! Also, each specialty drink comes with a show! When you order a zombie head you “see dead people” and if someone gets the nautilus then everyone dives under the sea! It really is a blast.

Out of all the drinks we tried we liked the Pearl and the Uh-Oa! The Uh-Oa has probably the best show and is a drink that two people can share!

Also, occasionally the Tiki statue on the back wall lights up as well as the octopus arm reaches down with a bottle- VERY fun.

Overall, would I recommend this experience? YES. Even with kids? Yup. They have a collectible plastic cup for kids too! This will be a place I’ll be sure to visit every trip to WDW.

What I learned during my unexpected “gap” year

things don’t always go according to plan

And for me after graduating from college, things certainly did NOT go according to my life plan I had plotted out for myself in my head. I had always pictured myself graduating from undergrad and then either going right on to law school with no problem or accepting a fantastic job in my chosen career field.

This was far from what happened…very far. I accepted an unpaid internship in marketing and was rejected from the two law schools I applied to. I applied to thousands of jobs- and I mean thousands and only got responses from three employers. One was a part time opportunity over 1,000 miles from me that required me to relocate and the others were either pyramid scheme jobs in disguise or a “build your client list” type job…neither was anything I wanted to commit to.

the feeling that things will surely never go your way again

Around let’s say the beginning of October after I graduated I started to feel defeated, like things would never look up. Nothing was going my way. My horse was unrideable, I had been rejected from my grad school choices, I couldn’t find a job that would allow me to move out of my childhood home and I had very little motivation to keep trying. It was disheartening, I had never had this kind of experience before, actual failure. I graduated with honors from a pretty good university, but that didn’t seem to matter, I was still not successful.

Seeing everyone else seem to have success on their facebook pages was disheartening, but one thing to keep in mind during tough times is that no one ever glorifies the hard times in their lives, they only want to share the positives. So I started to look at the positives and think about what I could do to change my life so I could get back on track.

Regrouping

After being able to show a friend’s horse at a horse show in KC, I regrouped and got back on track with what I needed to be doing. My parents encouraged me to take a LSAT prep course and I signed up and began taking it. Just the idea of having a schedule again really helped me. Even though I worked two jobs and did photography jobs on the side, I still really hadn’t gotten into a groove since everything was very flexible and subject to change.

I put my heart and soul into studying for that silly test, after lots of terrible practice scores and going through thousands of pages of workbooks and hours of class, I got my LSAT score back in January and happily was able to apply to law schools with the confidence that THIS time would be different.

and it was different

I got accepted. Not to just one school but to seven! It was thrilling, even though I got rejected from my dream/goal school, I got offered scholarships, sent bumper stickers and tons of emails telling me I was the perfect candidate for their school. It was uplifting and fantastic to finally have something turn positive. I had a future, I was going to law school. This is my chance to have a second chance at doing things correctly. I know what I need to do to be successful now, and if I fail this time I have no one to blame but myself- but I know I have what it takes, I have the drive and the will to make being a lawyer something that can be a reality. I have a plan and I’ve promised myself I have to make good on at least most of that plan.

how i would have handled this differently

My advice to everyone who is going into college, is in college, or is facing an unexpected gap year is this. If you are going to college now- a new freshman- please remember to take school seriously, this is a time to discover yourself and find out what you  are good at and what you want to do with the rest of your life. Try new things, meet new people, join a group, go greek, play sports, get involved, and go to class.

If you are in college, be sure that you are taking advantage of your opportunities. Ask for help finding internships because those internships will lead to a job somewhere. Network, make business cards and give them to potential employers. Keep your social media something you are proud that people will find when they google your name. Be smart and finish strong.

Unexpected gap year headed your way? Find a job that will keep you above water, any job, it can literally be anything that makes you money. Pet sit, house sit, baby sit, drive for lyft, do something. Don’t sit around and feel sorry for yourself that your life isn’t going according to plan. It happens to a lot more people than you think. Find something that you live and get immersed in it- this will help you re-prioritize and find out what direction you want to go, what way you really want to go, not what people have been telling you for your entire life. Once you’ve found that direction, start running that way and don’t stop until you’ve reached your goal whatever it may be. You can do it.

recap

Surround yourself with people who support you, or who have your best interest in mind. These people will help you reach the goals you set for yourself. Stay away from negativity.

Travel. See something new that inspires you to think. Travel is more inspirational than you think. It allows you to find yourself in a new place, you realize what is important to you and who are the people that will allow you to be yourself. It helps you grow and become a better person. Solo travel is even better, it can be scary at first, but it is worth every second of fear. You will prove to yourself that you are stronger than you ever thought you could be.

Disconnect from social media and technology for a bit. Re-prioritize your life and remember what is important. Don’t do things just because you’ll get a cool instagram photo. Do things because you want to, a cool photo is just an added bonus sometimes.

Set goals and make sure you meet them, give yourself rewards when you make it. This helps keep you on track and moving forward. Moving forward is key.

Don’t be afraid to have a little fun, let loose and go out with friends. Don’t forget where you came from but know where you want to go, or at least go try to figure out where you want to go. (And I’m not talking about bar hopping, I’m talking about life lol).

Never give up friends. You are strong and can turn your life into whatever you want it to be. Be open to new things, be flexible. Be willing to make a change or start from the bottom if you have to. You can do it.

Omaha Food: Little Espana

photo 1-4photo 2-4

Have you ever returned home from an amazing trip overseas or elsewhere having eaten the most amazing cultural food you’ve ever had in your entire life, just to realize you’ve been placed back in the Midwest of America where everything comes out of a freezer or a plastic bag and then onto your plate? Imagine a tiny bit of Europe nestled in the heart of Omaha, in Rockbrook Village is the latest edition to the traditional Spanish Tapas restaurant Espana, “Little Espana”.

The new Tapas bar features a modern feel with elements from the Benson counterpart evident throughout the building, exposed brick walls and large art pieces give the dining area a modern yet comfortable vibe. A modern looking bar greets you as you walk in the door with an entertaining light feature underneath the surface so the bar is constantly changing colors.

photo 2-1

Large canvas prints cover the walls as if to mimic an art gallery, and it works. The beautiful images and wall art give you a glimpse into the Spanish culture while you indulge in the traditional Spanish Tapas.

The tiles on the ceiling reminded me of the Espana in Benson and gave the whole room a warm and sophisticated feel. The same familiar Spanish music fills the space bringing you more and more into feeling just like you are sitting at a Tapas bar in Barcelona or Madrid.

This space also features a patio for outdoor dining with a covered space, the management also plans on having live entertainment in the very near future.

photo 1-1photo 3-1photo 5photo 4

Alright, enough about the space. You get it right? It makes you feel like you are in an upscale modern cafe and sitting in a neighborhood Tapas bar in Spain at the same time! Onto the best part, food!

Sangria. We asked for a sample of the white and the red sangria when the waitress asked us what we would prefer for a drink, so we got to sample each! I would recommend the white sangria to anyone who likes a more sweet drink, and the red for everyone else. I’m all about the sweet drinks, so of course I got a glass of the white! Sangria is available by the glass, half bottle and bottle, so perfect to share if you’d like!

Having been to Barcelona and trying out a Tapas bar there as well as tasting their sangria, I can say that this is authentic sangria and the only thing I’ve found even close to what you can get in Spain!

There is a full bar menu and a TON more drinks to choose from than in their Benson location, I’m sure they are all wonderful, but I just love the sangria!

photo 3-4photo 4-3

Onto the actual food! The two locations have slightly different menus, this location in Rockbrook Village is designed to be a quicker experience. Instead of the made from scratch when you order paella and it taking 45 minutes this location has fewer paella choices and they only take 15 minutes to make.

Espana prides themselves on making their food from scratch, so everything is homemade and it makes the food that much better (and better for you). Tapas come out pretty quickly after you order and are served on these fun stacking plates, perfect to share (or grab your own dish before anyone else can!).

On the menu there is truly something for everyone. Spanish salads (enough for a meal), Spanish sandwiches (something new, I debated trying one but I always end up getting Tapas), some basic entrees (chicken, salmon, steak, mahi-mahi), cold and hot tapas and of course a few desserts.

photo 1-3

The first of the tapas that we shared was the new fried manchengo cheese in a whiskey sauce. Absolutely to die for, the sweet whiskey sauce complimented the cheese and the light batter on the cheese so well you could just gobble up the whole plate (but I would recommend sharing so you can eat some other things besides just cheese!)

photo 1

The second of the new tapas we tried was the Pig’s Ear. I’ve never had pig’s ear before so I was curious, and the menu mentioned that it had fried egg on top so I couldn’t resist trying it (because if it has egg on it, what can go wrong?) This is another dish I would recommend sharing because there is a TON of food hidden underneath those two eggs! Little strips of lightly battered pig’s ear, the waitress recommended that we break the yolk of the egg to use that as a sauce for the pig’s ear and that was an excellent recommendation. The dish was a little salty, but not in a bad way at all. Just a warning for anyone who is on a low salt diet, this is probably not the best choice of dish for you!

photo 2-2

My personal favorite from childhood til now, patatas fritas. Fried diced potatoes covered in the best aioli sauce ever. When I was younger this used to be a dish I would get and I would ask for extra of the aioli sauce because it is so sweet and delicious. I still love this dish and the potatoes are great to soak up any extra sauces from any of the other dishes you may have ordered. This is also a dish best shared as the aioli is rich and filling!

photo 3-2

These little sliders are one of the new tapas at this location, they came with fries (not pictures) and I believe they were pickled vegetables, I did not try this dish, but my mom raved over how good it was, so I believe this is a winner as well- and it could make a whole meal if you aren’t all that hungry! (Sharing is not necessary for this dish).

photo 3-3

Some beautiful sourdough bread that came with the meal to soak up any extra sauce we might have.

photo 3

And finally my all time favorite of the tapas- Empanadillas de pollo. Chicken in little pouches, with some sort of amazing flavoring on the inside served with spicy aioli dipping sauce. I’m making myself hungry just looking at the photo, this is my all time favorite and I never share! The combination of flavors just explode in your mouth. This is my favorite of the hot tapas and I almost always get it! (perfect to not share!)

photo 5-2

Overall, this was an excellent dining experience and I would recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere different to go on date night or for family dinner or even for a nice lunch. Service was excellent, we took our time eating and never felt rushed, there was not too much noise level and it was easy to converse with your table. Prices are reasonable but not cheap, however the quality of the food is worth paying a more than you would for a chain restaurant.

I look forward to visiting this more convenient location more often, but I’m sure we will always go to the Benson Espana location as well.

I hope everyone enjoyed my first Omaha Food blog and I look forward to sharing my culinary experiences throughout town with you again!

New Year’s Eve at Sea: Disney Dream

Have you ever wanted to ring in the New Year in shorts and a t-shirt? Or perhaps with free champagne and snacks while you wait for the ball to drop in NYC? All while aboard one of the most amazing cruise ships on the water? Look no further than a New Years Eve Disney Cruise!

Our cruise featured a short itinerary with Castaway Cay and Nassau on the list. We spent most of the day on the ship while docked at Nassau and spent the day on Castaway Cay on the adult beach but mostly we spent a lot of time enjoying what the Disney Dream has to offer. Mostly the Rainforest Room in the spa!

We also tacked on a short trip to WDW before we left for our cruise to make a longer vacation our of the trip!

IMG_5444

After a nice dinner at one of the boat’s excellent restaurants, we headed over to the bar district on board for a glass of the pink champagne made specially for the ship, relaxed in one of the lounges, watched the show for the night, and checked out some of the other activities (comedians ect.) before going to the top decks to wait for the clock to hit midnight!

Special Mickey clocks had been placed around the open deck area so we could count down to midnight better and keep track of time (I mean if you really wanted to). The whole crew was decked out in their very finest garb and most of the boat chose to dress up as well, which was pretty fun!

IMG_5445

While having a dance party in the Caribbean on the 31st of December, we were served champagne (adults only of course) and fruity beverages for the kids as well as countless appetizers (many which I turned away having just eaten a huge dinner of course), however I did not turn away the delicious little bite sized desserts they were serving!

The champagne flutes we got to keep too!

IMG_5448 IMG_5449

The big screen showed the activities in NYC and we watched the end of the ball dropping after we did our own countdown and had the best fireworks at sea! The aqua-duck was lit up and of course there was a dance party after the fireworks! In usual DCL style it was a wonderful way to celebrate a new year!

IMG_5454 IMG_5466

The boat of course was still decorated for Christmas and there was still plenty of Christmas merchandise available. Our fellow cruisers were very friendly and we very much so enjoyed sitting in the sun while our friends at home were stuck inside while it snowed.

IMG_5478

Another plus to this particular cruise? A special New Years Eve poster, limited edition, only those on board a Disney ship for a NYE cruise can get them! We had ours framed with some photos from our trip.

My thoughts: if you want to spend New Years with friends and family in a safe and fun environment (also warm) go on a Disney Cruise! Also, you don’t have to worry about who will drive home after a night of celebrating, just crawl back to your stateroom! For those adults worried that they will have to pay an extraordinary amount of money for drinks, don’t worry, you can carry on alcohol with you (however they ask you to consume your own alcohol in your room). There are lots of adult events and of course a lot of kids events, a win-win for everyone, and plus you can do it all in flip flops! This cruise is a bit pricey (we went on vacation club points) but it is a holiday cruise so a large price tag is to be expected, for sure is worth the money!

Tips: bring formal wear and get great photos from the night, bring NYE hats (some are provided but it is fun to bring your own and the kids might take all of the DCL ones)

As always all photos are my property, please leave a comment to purchase a photo, and I’d love to hear comments on what else you would like to see me blog about!

Happy sailing and I hope a cruise director welcomes you “home” soon!

On Graduating…

As I sit here in my partially packed dorm room, my roommate having already mostly moved out, it begins to hit me. I’m graduating this weekend from college. It seems like just yesterday I was tossing my hat up for my high school graduation and now I’m preparing to graduate from university. Crazy how time flies. Graduating would be much more exciting if I knew what my future held for me- but what would be the fun in knowing what I’m doing with my life… It’ll all work out, but now seems like a good time to reflect on the past four years.

freshmen yearIt all started when I moved into Swanson Hall freshman year. I was introduced to my roommate and my suite-mates (one of which would become my roommate for the next three years). I remember going to my very first class as a college student, being scared to be on my own, being scared that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with college classes. Soon all those fears passed (after a few pep talks from some of my oldest friends) and I began to grow. I learned some fun skills in my photojournalism classes from award winning photographer Fr. Don Doll, I learned how to use the adobe creative suite, I learned everything there is to know about Greek Art, I learned new things from my core classes, and I struggled through my Philosophy classes. Through all of this I came to grow as a student and as a person. However I must say that most of the growing and emerging into adulthood didn’t happen until I studied abroad. It was then that I truly learned how to be independent and discovered who I truly am.

Big BenMy college years just flew right by and I feel like I could have used this time in better ways, but at the end of the day this is how I spent the past four years and there’s nothing I can do to change it and I can’t complain about who I am and where I’m at right now so I must have done something right. I tend to think about what could have been when it comes to the last four years; things I could have majored in, groups I could have joined, places I could have been. But the last four years have been a big stepping stone for me and I think I’ve come out of my college career ready to move on to the next step. I also have had the realization that maybe just maybe undergraduate life isn’t supposed to prepare you for a job, but it is to prepare you for real life. I’ve learned more life skills during college (more while abroad than stateside) and I feel like even though I don’t know what I’m doing I might at least know how to get there once an opportunity arises.

Overall the benefits of my college career outweigh the regrets. If I had done things differently I wouldn’t have my amazing barn family and I wouldn’t have gone to London, two things I wouldn’t change for the world. I will be proud to walk across that stage and accept my diploma in front of my classmates and family. Thank you to everyone who helped me on this four year journey through college. I can’t thank my family and friends enough for helping me to follow my dreams. Also- shout out to my horse and barn family who kept me sane through it all (mini-shout out to Ross Nye Stables in London whose ponies kept me sane during my time abroad). Happy graduation class of 2014, don’t focus on the ‘what ifs’ but on what we accomplished in college because it kinda is a big deal. We did it!

Social Media Reflection: A Semester in Review

The end of another semester (my final undergraduate semester) is coming to a close. In my social media class I learned more than I had ever hoped to learn and more. From learning analytics I’d never even heard of to learning what content marketing meant, I’ve found a new way to use social media. I’ve learned about the best times to post on social media and even about new social media platforms I’d never used before. I learned to use Google+ and I’ve found that the audience that is reached there is completely different than the audiences I already reach on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I made a successful LinkedIn account and have used it to network with people from grade school, high school, college, study abroad and more. I am excited that I can use this new tool to make connections and help me with my job hunt. I loved that we learned to use tools like Klout, Kred, and TweetReach. I’ve been monitoring all those sources all semester and I’m proud of how my scores have grown.

kloutscore

My Klout score is currently a 59, but it has been teetering on the verge of 60 and 61 some days. I am proud to say that I use social media well and reach a lot of different people with my posts. Using Klout helped me realize how influential I can be if I post correctly.kredscore

Kred still kind of confuses me. I’m still unsure if I’m doing well. However my score has increased a LOT over the semester! Almost up to 630 when I started out in the low 600s at the beginning of the semester. However I do use this to figure out if I’ve been posting enough content across all of my platforms to make an impression, so maybe I do know how this stuff works!tweetreach

My tweet reach might be the most impressive stat that has changed. At the beginning of the semester my tweets were only reaching about 200 people, look at me now!

Our visit to the humane society was something I appreciated a lot. Not only did we get a chance to see some adorable animals, but I also learned a lot about how to run social media effectively.

Making a social media analysis and then using the analysis to form a plan might be one of the most realistic projects I’ve ever done in school. I hope that I get to use my plan that I made or at least get the chance to do the same thing one day when I have a job! I think that this ability to analyze as well as formulate a plan is the most important skill I learned in this class.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I’ve learned a lot about social media (including that MySpace is back). I’ve also gained appreciation for those who run large social media- it takes a lot of time and energy to get multiple accounts on different platforms to have a similar look and feel as well as share content on a regular basis and answer back any questions or concerns. I cannot imagine the amount of notifications some of those Facebook and Twitter pages receive for larger companies, or even just the humane society! I found this class interesting and I can see myself using the skills I learned in this class in a professional situation. I think that this class was a great way to round out my degree and makes me a more useful job candidate.

10 things to remember when you head off to college

When I first began to get ready to head to college about four years ago, I wish that I would have been told a lot of things to help me get through that rough first few months as a college student. This blog post serves as a list of helpful hints for graduating High School seniors to keep in mind when choosing a college and heading off to school in the fall.

  1. Be true to yourself.

No matter where you end up at school, college is a transitioning step in our lives. These four years are a chance to discover who you truly are and find direction in your own life. Be sure to stick to your values and find friends who support your goals and help you grow.

  2. Don’t be afraid to try new things.  College is a time to figure out what your passions are. Make time to join clubs with people who try new things. Go skydiving, play lacrosse, try out for that walk on spot on the football team.
  3. Travel. Study abroad if you can. It will change your life I can vouch for that. Check out my blog I wrote about why everyone should study abroad for more information on that topic.
  4. Take core classes first. Lots of people come in thinking they know what they are passionate about learning, but most people change their major at least once in their college career. Who knows, your intro to anthropology class might inspire you to do something other than becoming a doctor!
  5. Get a job. This keeps you busy and from spending too much time on pinterest and tumblr. It also is proven that college students who work at least part-time during college are more likely to be hired when they start looking for a career.
  6. Go to class. As nice as it might sound sleeping in, the fact of the matter is that you (or your parents) pay a LOT of money for you to attend college. Make sure you get your money’s worth.
  7. Stay up late. These are your last four years of “freedom” before real life comes and knocks on your door. Make the most of your time and remember to have fun!
  8. Eat healthy. Don’t let your eating habits go down the drain, be sure to keep eating well. (It’s possible on a budget, I promise you.) Frozen dinners can be healthy too (I may blog about those later, I’ve tested pretty much every kind).
  9. Make connections. Connections are key when it comes to finding a job. Many of your professors will be more than willing to help you come graduation be sure you leave them with an impression you’ll want your future employers to have of you.
  10. Don’t text in class. Remember you’ve paid a pretty penny and worked hard to get into college, now make the most of it! Pay attention! It will help your grades in the long run and respect your professor who came up with content to teach you that day. (Also, if you use a laptop to take notes turn off the internet or do what you must to keep your screen on word processing. If you are sitting on Facebook the whole class you’ve gotten nothing out of going.)

Be sure to come back for my next blog post on things you’ll want to be sure to pack when headed off to college in the fall!
